Cornwall Holidays at Pols Piece

These are the latest additions to the Pols Piece Pets Corner. We bought them at Auction on Saturday 9th May. We have a right mixture.

There are 4 Rhode Island Reds, which are the rusty coloured ones. Then there are 8 Jersey giant Blacks, 1 Legbar & 5 Araucanas.

We are keeping them in the garage for the next 2 weeks, with a lamp over them. Then we will introduce them to the rest of the flock, and see what happens!!

The long wait is over

After sitting for 5 weeks, 2 of Daisy Mae's eggs hatched on the 4th Feb. Unfortunately one of the ducklings died due to the cold, but we brought the survivor, and Daisy in from the cold to the garage. He or she is now a week old, and doing well. Daisy has gone back to be the other ducks, and YumYum, (Tamar's choice), is under a lamp in the utility.

She was taken into St Issey school today (13th Feb), for pet week. All the kids thought she was beautiful, and she survived all the handling.

Daisy Mae, in a moment of madness, decided to sit on a nest on the 2nd Jan 09. Normally they would start to do this in April. Since then she has put up with

-9degC, gale force winds, torrential rain, and today (2.2.09) snow. We are hoping that around 6th Feb the 8 eggs that she is sitting on are due to start hatching. So keep your fingers crossed.

We said goodbye to Phoenix and Phoebe this summer. This was due to the fact that Phoenix unfortunately was a bit of a pest to the female ducks that we had here. They went to a friend of mine near Bath, who has a smallholding, and after the initial trauma of travelling settled in very well.

Being the sucker that I am, at the auction we came home with 2 more female ducks. This one to the left is Sugar, and she is a Saxony duck. The picture doesn't do her justice. She has a wonderful ginger colour down her chest and head.

We also came home with Nice. She is a Silver appleyard cross Aylesbury, again very pretty and my photo of her doesn't do her justice. They have both settled in really well to the "farmyard." They have become firm friends.

Trying to keep things uptodate, hasn't been as easy as I thought. However I have now found time to do an update.

Truffles ducklings all went to auction, and sold. We took 7 of Jemima's and they sold too. We kept two which we have called Lilly (above right ) and Peaches (above left).

We also intended to get a cockerel and a couple more hens, due to the lack of eggs during the summer, and the high demand for eggs. Well you know the story, and I'm a softy, as you all know. So we came home with a young cockerel who we have called Goldigger, 3 point of lay buff sussex hens which we have named Tikka (the one with the green leg ring), Masala (red leg ring) and Korma.

Tall Ships in Falmouth

This is one event in Cornwall not to be missed as it only happens every 10 years or so. So make sure you book your next holiday to coincide with it! We all headed down with a decadent picnic and viewed from our friends boat and the weather gods decided to be nice for a change. There were 1000's of boats out on the water, canyons were fired, parachutist jumped, and of course there was the spectacle of the the Tall Ships themselves. The parade of sail followed the coastline past Pendennis Castle and Gyllynvase beach so the shore spectactors had prime views.

The Eden Project

We were reminded of the one of the biggest tourist attractions on our doorstep last week when we went to see KT Tunstall at the Eden Project near St Austell. Only half an hour drive away meant we had lots of time to have a good look around the huge biomes followed by dinner at the Italian restaurant and then bopped the night away to the music! It is a spectacular place to visit and has to be seen to be believed, it is hard to imagine that this used to be a quarry and someone had to vision to create what they have now. Fantastic!

Padstow Carnival Week

Fun and games are happening this week at Padstow Carnival Week starting Sunday July 27. Lots of stalls and refreshments on the quay and there is a myriad of events happen during the week. A favourite for the kids is the Punch and Judy and show and the children's disco. There will be the town's lifeboat celebrations, a jazz night and steam organ at the bandstand, quiz night and skittles and this will all finish with the grand carnival at the end of the week.

Come down and join in the fun, we are sure you will enjoy it as the atmosphere is awesome!

POLS PIECE PETS CORNER

As most of our guests are aware, we have a "pets corner." Which consists of 9 Chickens, 10 Ducks and 2 rabbits.

However this year for the 1st year, we have had some small additions. Truffle, our Chocolate Call duck sat on a clutch of 8 eggs and hatched 4. Jemima, our Buff call duck sat on a next of 10 and hatched 9?

Jemima (stood) with Peking and the ducklings at 17 days old, they grow very fast.

Just look at them now they are now 6 and a half weeks old and almost as big as Truffle who is just in behind the one in the middle at the front.

None of the ducklings have been named as yet, this is because we will hopefully be selling them to good homes.

Well here we are, finally making it into the 21st Century!!

We thought it would be useful for us to be able to update people on what was, is and has been happening here at Pols Piece. Not only that but for our guests, and hopefully future guests, to be able to write their thoughts and experiences on our Blog, so that for those people who where considering coming to Pols Piece could have a good overall view of what a holiday at Pols Piece might provide them with.
